A Sumptuous Impression: Aēsop Store in Singapore
Photo: Wai Kay Photography
Inside, the architects have taken up the history of the place, a former nutmeg plantation, and the subterranean location of the shop in a shopping gallery. The abstraction of an upside-down forest and the choice of materials with all its colours and language of form recall the genius loci: the walls are painted in the colour of nutmeg blossoms. Thin oak slats representing tree trunks hang from the ceiling, which symbolizes the forest floor. The “trees” form a gentle wave that accentuates the fixture islands with their movement. Lamps have been discreetly placed among the hanging installation.
Between the dark-painted ceiling and the carpet of sisal fibres, nine delicate columns, each made of four brass pipes, carry the round tables used to present the cosmetic products. A washstand and a sales counter of the same materials give this space a sumptuous look. The unique fixtures, which are comprised of standardized elements, have become an international trademark of Norwegian architecture studio Snøhetta for their design of the Aēsop shops.
