Facade Panels as Solar Protection
On the Atlantic coast of southern France lies the town of Royan, known for its post-war modernist architecture and urban planning. Taking his cue from the local 1950s-style architecture, architect Thomas Danin created a villa in neighbouring Vaux-sur-Mer. The movable facade panels made of the solid-surface material Hi-Macs and designed by the Kazéhana & Tuillière studio, are a special decorative design feature with a solar protection function. The three panels can be moved across a width of 10 m on slide rails. The 4-m-high and 80-cm-wide elements have recesses in the form of stylised suns and crescents. Designer Harumi Kazéhana’s pattern is accordingly called Soluna. According to designer Julien Tuillière, the solid-surface material in Alpine White from LG Hausys was also suitable for the project precisely because of the high precision and quality with which the customised elements could be implemented. In addition, slatted sliding shutters made of Hi-Macs on the south and west sides of the residential building protect against heat entering the interior.
