Ark for Biodiversity

When North German beverage company Friedrich Lütvogt built its new logistics centre in Wagenfeld, also important for it was the overall ecological concept. The building was realised by Schaffitzel, who erected the supporting structure, building shell and office wing as a complete timber construction. Around 1,150 m3 of glulam was used, which stores a total of 931.45 t of CO2. The building has three sections: A 20-m-wide incoming-goods centre provides access to two symmetrically-arranged factory halls, each 58 × 77 × 12 m in size. In both halls, three block-bonded, 80-mm overheight pincer beams with dimensions of 2.16 × 0.4 × 25.5 m take the roof loads and transfer them into two reinforced concrete columns. The roof has a total area of 10,300 m2 and is one of the largest biodiversity roofs in Germany. The grassland, a so-called Northwest German sandy xeric grassland, contains wild plants native to the area, which in turn provide a habitat for numerous insects and birds. It increases the service life of the roof, creates a microclimate through its water absorption capacity and evaporation, acts as an air filter and helps to save energy as protection against cold and heat.
