In our complex world, isn’t it tempting to try to detect simplicity? In architecture, this endeavour is frequently inverted: something that appears simple at first glance – e.g. the clear building massing of SANAA’s Louvre Lens – may turn out to be a complex construct incorporating state-of-the-art engineering. Li Xiaodong’s library in China demonstrates that some buildings appear more complex than they are. We ¬explore both sides in the next issue.
